We have all been there. Plans changed last minute, a meeting got rescheduled, or maybe you found a better train on a different date. Whatever the reason, cancelling a train ticket on IRCTC does not have to be stressful. But the refund rules can be confusing if you do not know how they work — and nobody wants to lose money unnecessarily.

This guide walks you through exactly how to cancel your IRCTC ticket online, how much refund you will get, and what to do in tricky situations like partially confirmed tickets or missed trains.

How to Cancel an E-Ticket on IRCTC (Step by Step)

If you booked your ticket through the IRCTC website or app, cancellation is straightforward.

Step 1 — Log into your IRCTC account at irctc.co.in or on the IRCTC Rail Connect app.

Step 2 — Go to "My Transactions" or "Booked Ticket History" from the menu.

Step 3 — Find the ticket you want to cancel. Click on it to see the full details.

Step 4 — Click the "Cancel Ticket" button. If you are travelling with a group, you can choose to cancel individual passengers instead of the entire booking.

Step 5 — Confirm the cancellation. The refund will be processed to the same payment method you used for booking.

Refunds typically show up within 5 to 7 working days for net banking and debit cards. UPI refunds are usually faster — sometimes within 24 to 48 hours. Credit card refunds may take up to 2 billing cycles.

IRCTC Cancellation Charges in 2026

Here is where most people get confused. The cancellation fee depends on when you cancel and what class you booked. The earlier you cancel, the less you pay in charges.

Confirmed Tickets — Cancellation Charges

  • More than 48 hours before departure — Flat cancellation charge based on class: Rs 240 for AC First and Executive Class, Rs 200 for AC 2 Tier and AC 3 Tier, Rs 180 for AC Chair Car, Rs 120 for Sleeper Class, and Rs 60 for Second Sitting.
  • Between 48 hours and 12 hours before departure — 25% of the base fare is deducted as cancellation charge, subject to the minimum flat charge mentioned above.
  • Less than 12 hours before departure but before chart preparation — 50% of the base fare is deducted.
  • After chart preparation — No online cancellation is possible. You need to file a TDR (we will cover this below).

Waitlisted Tickets

Good news here — if your ticket is still on the waitlist (not confirmed or RAC) and gets auto-cancelled after chart preparation, you get a full refund minus a small clerkage charge of Rs 60 per passenger. If you cancel a waitlisted ticket yourself before chart preparation, the same clerkage charge applies.

This is why it is smart to check your PNR status on ConfirmYatra before making a decision. If your waitlist position is not improving, cancelling early saves you from higher charges later.

RAC Tickets

RAC tickets follow the same cancellation rules as confirmed tickets. Since RAC guarantees you a seat on the train, Indian Railways treats it similar to a confirmed booking for cancellation purposes.

Tatkal Tickets

This is the painful part. Confirmed Tatkal tickets are non-refundable. If you cancel a confirmed Tatkal ticket, you get zero refund regardless of when you cancel. However, if your Tatkal ticket is still on the waitlist and gets auto-cancelled after chart preparation, you do get a full refund minus clerkage.

What Is TDR and When Should You File One?

TDR stands for Ticket Deposit Receipt. You file a TDR when online cancellation is not possible — typically after the reservation chart has been prepared. Here are the common scenarios:

  • Train cancelled by Railways — Full refund. File TDR within 72 hours.
  • Train delayed by more than 3 hours — Full refund if you choose not to travel. File TDR within 72 hours.
  • AC not working in your coach — Fare difference refund. File TDR.
  • Partially confirmed group ticket after chart — TDR for the unconfirmed passengers.

To file a TDR, go to IRCTC website, navigate to "File TDR" under your booked ticket history, select the reason, and submit. IRCTC processes TDR claims within 60 to 90 days.

Can You Cancel a Counter Ticket Online?

No. Tickets bought at the railway station counter cannot be cancelled online. You need to visit the counter with the original ticket and a valid ID before the train departs. After departure, you can file a TDR at the station.

Cancelling Tickets for Individual Passengers

If you booked for a group of 4 but only 2 people want to cancel, IRCTC lets you do a partial cancellation. During the cancellation process, simply uncheck the passengers who are still travelling and cancel only the rest. Each cancelled passenger incurs the standard cancellation charge individually.

Smart Tips to Save Money on Cancellations

Cancel early. The 48-hour window gives you the lowest flat-rate charge. Do not wait until the last minute hoping plans will change back.

Monitor your waitlist on ConfirmYatra. If your confirmation chances look low, cancel the waitlisted ticket early and book an alternate train. ConfirmYatra shows you trains with better availability on the same route.

Avoid Tatkal for uncertain plans. Since confirmed Tatkal is non-refundable, only book Tatkal when your travel is definite.

Use ConfirmYatra's alternate route finder. Instead of cancelling and rebooking, check if a different route or train combination works. You might find confirmed seats without needing to cancel at all.

Keep your booking confirmation email. You will need the PNR number and transaction ID for any refund disputes.

How Long Does the Refund Take?

The refund timeline depends on the payment method. UPI payments are the fastest — usually within 1 to 3 working days. Net banking and debit card refunds take 5 to 7 working days. Credit cards can take 7 to 15 working days depending on the bank's billing cycle.

If your refund does not show up within the expected timeframe, check the IRCTC refund status page or contact IRCTC customer care with your PNR and transaction details.

Wrapping Up

Cancelling a train ticket on IRCTC is not complicated once you understand the rules. The key takeaway is simple — cancel early, know the charges, and always check your options on ConfirmYatra before making a decision. Sometimes finding an alternate train beats paying cancellation fees, and ConfirmYatra helps you compare all the possibilities in one place.
