How to log in to IRCTC and book Indian train tickets from the USA

Want your Indian Railways trains sorted before you fly to India? You can log in to IRCTC and book from anywhere in the US — the platform is not geo-blocked. The two things that actually trip people up abroad are the OTP sent to an Indian mobile and international card payment. Here is the complete process.

Can You Log In to IRCTC From the USA?

Yes. IRCTC (the official Indian Railways booking site) works worldwide and is not blocked in the USA — you do not need a VPN, and you do not need to be in India. Your existing account logs in exactly as it does back home. The only real hurdles are account verification (an Indian-number OTP) and paying with a foreign card, both solved below.

IRCTC Login From USA: Step by Step

1. Open the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect app.

2. Click Login and enter your User Name and Password.

3. Enter the captcha and sign in — the account opens the same as in India.

4. Forgot your password? Use Forgot Password and reset it via your registered email or mobile (an international number works for email-based reset).

No VPN and no special browser needed — if sign-in is slow, it is usually server load, not a block (fixes below).

Why IRCTC Login Is Not Working From the USA (and Fixes)

If login feels broken from the US, it is almost always one of these:

  • Slow or timing out: peak India hours mean heavy load. Use the Rail Connect app, try a different browser, or sign in during off-peak IST.
  • Captcha or page will not load: clear cache and cookies, pause aggressive ad-blockers for the site, or switch browser.
  • "Account locked": too many wrong attempts — wait, then reset the password.
  • It is not a country block. A VPN is unnecessary and can sometimes make payment harder, so avoid it.

The OTP Problem: Login, Booking & Payment to an Indian Number

This is the single biggest NRI headache. IRCTC (and your bank) often send a one-time password (OTP) to your registered Indian mobile number — for verification, booking, or card payment. If you cannot receive Indian SMS in the US, you get stuck at the last step. Fixes:

  • Keep your Indian number reachable — on international roaming, or as an eSIM/second line that still receives SMS abroad.
  • Register or update an international mobile number on your IRCTC account so OTPs come to your US number. See IRCTC registration with an international mobile number.
  • For card-payment OTP, use a card or bank that supports OTP to a US number or app-based approval (more below).

Sorting the OTP before you try to book saves the most frustration.

Booking Trains From the USA (After Login)

Once you are in, booking is identical to India:

1. Enter From, To and date, then search.

2. Pick your class (Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, 1AC, Chair Car) and check availability.

3. Add passenger details and book.

4. Pay (see below) and get your e-ticket by email and SMS.

Check live seat availability on our train search and track any booking on the PNR status tool.

Booking & Tatkal Times in US Time Zones

India time (IST) has no daylight saving, so the booking windows land in the previous evening or night for most of the US. Approximate opening times:

  • General booking (ARP), 8:00 AM IST — about 9:30–10:30 PM US Eastern or 6:30–7:30 PM US Pacific, the evening before.
  • Tatkal AC, 10:00 AM IST — about 11:30 PM–12:30 AM Eastern or 8:30–9:30 PM Pacific.
  • Tatkal Sleeper (non-AC), 11:00 AM IST — about 12:30–1:30 AM Eastern or 9:30–10:30 PM Pacific.

(The one-hour range is US daylight saving.) For the rules, see IRCTC advance reservation period and IRCTC Tatkal timing and rules.

Paying With an International Card

Payment is where bookings fail most from abroad. IRCTC accepts international Visa/Mastercard through specific gateways. Pick the right option and make sure your card supports an OTP / 3-D Secure step you can approve from the US. Full walkthrough: how to pay on IRCTC with an international card.

NRIs vs Tourists: General or Foreign Tourist Quota?

  • Indian citizens and NRIs book the normal General quota like everyone else.
  • Foreign passport holders can use the Foreign Tourist Quota (FTQ), which reserves berths on many popular trains and needs passport details. See Indian Railways Foreign Tourist Quota: how to book.

Getting a Confirmed Seat (Not Just Waitlisted)

Indian trains sell out early, so book as far ahead as possible (up to 60 days). If you land on RAC or waiting list, check your real odds with will my RAC ticket get confirmed and RAC or waiting list: which is better, and track it on the PNR status tool.

Quick Checklist for Booking From the USA

  • A working IRCTC login plus an OTP route you can actually receive.
  • An accepted international card with an OTP you can approve.
  • Know the US time your booking window opens.
  • Passport details ready if using the Foreign Tourist Quota.
  • Book early and keep a backup on busy routes.

Bottom line: logging in to IRCTC from the USA is easy — the account is not geo-blocked. Sort your OTP (Indian number reachable, or an international number on file), pay with an OTP-ready international card, book during the India-time window (usually your evening), and book early for a confirmed seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I log in to IRCTC from the USA?

Yes. IRCTC is not geo-blocked, so you can log in from the USA with your username and password, no VPN needed. If it is slow, use the Rail Connect app or a different browser.

Why is my IRCTC login not working from the USA?

Usually it is server load during peak India hours, a cache or browser issue, or the OTP going to an Indian number — not a country block. Try the app, clear cache, and make sure you can receive your OTP.

Do I need a VPN to use IRCTC from the USA?

No. IRCTC works directly from the US without a VPN, and a VPN can sometimes make payment harder, so it is best avoided.

How do I get the IRCTC OTP if it goes to my Indian number?

Keep your Indian number reachable (roaming or eSIM), or register an international mobile number on your IRCTC account so OTPs reach your US number.

What time does IRCTC booking open in US time?

Because IST has no daylight saving, general booking (8 AM IST) opens about 9:30–10:30 PM US Eastern or 6:30–7:30 PM Pacific the evening before; Tatkal opens late evening to early morning US time.

Should NRIs use the General or Foreign Tourist Quota?

Indian citizens and NRIs use the General quota. The Foreign Tourist Quota is for foreign passport holders and reserves berths on many popular trains.
