Premium Tatkal: Charges, Timing and How It Works
Premium Tatkal can get you a seat when Tatkal is sold out — but at a price. Here's what Premium Tatkal is, its dynamic charges, timing, and how it differs from normal Tatkal.

When both regular and Tatkal quotas are sold out, Premium Tatkal is often your last chance at a confirmed seat — but you pay more for it. Here is how it works.
What Is Premium Tatkal?
Premium Tatkal is a special quota with dynamic (surge) pricing offered on select trains. Unlike normal Tatkal, the fare rises as seats fill up, so early buyers pay less and later buyers pay much more. It is meant for travellers who need a confirmed berth at the last minute and are willing to pay a premium.
Timing — When It Opens
Premium Tatkal opens at the same time as Tatkal, one day before the journey (excluding the travel date): around 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes. For the full Tatkal window, see IRCTC Tatkal timing and rules.
Charges — Why It's Expensive
- The fare uses dynamic pricing — it can be 1.5x to 3x the base fare or more, depending on demand.
- There is no fixed Tatkal fee; instead the whole fare surges with occupancy.
- Only confirmed seats are sold — there is no Premium Tatkal waiting list, so if none show, none are available.
Premium Tatkal vs Normal Tatkal
- Price: Normal Tatkal adds a fixed charge; Premium Tatkal surges dynamically (usually costlier).
- Waitlist: Normal Tatkal has a waitlist (TQWL); Premium Tatkal is confirmed-only.
- Refund: Both are generally non-refundable on cancellation.
Is It Worth It?
If you must travel and nothing else is available, Premium Tatkal guarantees a confirmed seat — worth it for urgent trips. If you have flexibility, a normal Tatkal or booking early is cheaper.
After booking, track your ticket on our PNR status tool.
Bottom line: Premium Tatkal offers confirmed last-minute seats at surge prices, opens with Tatkal one day ahead, has no waitlist, and is non-refundable — use it only when you truly need the seat.
