Are Tatkal tickets refundable — cancellation and refund rules explained

Tatkal tickets follow different refund rules from normal tickets, and most travellers are surprised by them. Here is exactly when a Tatkal ticket is refundable and when it is not.

The Main Rule: Confirmed Tatkal = No Refund

For a confirmed Tatkal ticket, cancellation generally gives no refund. This is the key difference from a regular ticket — you cannot cancel a confirmed Tatkal ticket and expect your money back. So book Tatkal only when you are sure of travelling.

When You DO Get a Refund

There are important exceptions where a refund is given:

  • Train cancelled by railways — full refund, automatically.
  • Train delayed more than 3 hours and you choose not to travel — refund by filing a TDR before departure. See how to file a TDR.
  • Route diverted and your boarding/destination station is not on the new route — refund via TDR.
  • AC failure or coach not attached — partial/full refund via TDR.

Tatkal Waitlist (TQWL) Refund

If your Tatkal ticket is waitlisted (TQWL) and does not confirm, it is automatically cancelled and refunded (minus a small clerkage charge) — you don't need to do anything. TQWL odds are low, so read Tatkal waiting list confirmation chances.

Refund Timing

When a refund is due, it returns to your original payment method, usually within 3 to 7 working days — see IRCTC refund time.

What About Premium Tatkal?

Premium Tatkal follows the same rule — confirmed tickets are generally non-refundable on cancellation.

Track your Tatkal ticket on our PNR status tool.

Bottom line: a confirmed Tatkal ticket is non-refundable on cancellation, but you still get a refund if the train is cancelled, delayed over 3 hours, or diverted, and an unconfirmed TQWL is auto-refunded.
