Delhi to Goa by train is one of those journeys that people remember for years. Not because it is short — it is roughly 1,800 to 2,100 kilometres depending on the route — but because the last stretch along the Konkan coast is genuinely one of the most beautiful train rides on the planet. Green mountains, river bridges, tunnels, and glimpses of the Arabian Sea rolling by your window.

It is a long journey, usually 24 to 36 hours, but if you pick the right train and the right class, it is an experience worth having at least once.

Best Trains from Delhi to Goa in 2026

There is no single "Delhi to Goa" direct train that runs daily. You have a few options, and each has its own trade-offs.

Rajdhani Express (via Konkan Railway)

The Goa Rajdhani (Train No. 12431/12432) runs between Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) and Madgaon (Goa). This is the premium option — fully air-conditioned with meals included in the ticket price. The journey takes approximately 26 hours.

Why choose Rajdhani: Fastest, most comfortable, meals included, punctual. Available in 1AC, 2AC, and 3AC.

Fares (approximate): 3AC Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,800, 2AC Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,200, 1AC Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,500.

Downside: Runs only twice a week (check exact days on ConfirmYatra). Fills up fast — book well in advance.

Goa Express

The Goa Express (Train No. 12779/12780) runs daily between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Vasco Da Gama via Madgaon. It takes about 28 to 30 hours and is significantly cheaper than the Rajdhani.

Why choose Goa Express: Daily service, available in Sleeper class (budget-friendly), covers the full Konkan route.

Fares (approximate): Sleeper Rs 650 to Rs 800, 3AC Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,900, 2AC Rs 2,400 to Rs 2,800.

Downside: Sleeper class gets crowded. The train tends to run late, sometimes by 2 to 4 hours.

Nizamuddin to Madgaon AC Express

Another solid option that runs a few times a week. Fully AC, reasonably priced, and covers the scenic Konkan stretch.

The Route via Mumbai (Connecting Trains)

If direct trains are sold out, a popular alternative is taking any fast train from Delhi to Mumbai (Rajdhani, Duronto, or Vande Bharat) and then a separate train from Mumbai to Goa. The Delhi-Mumbai leg takes 15 to 17 hours, and Mumbai-Goa takes another 8 to 12 hours. Total journey time is similar, but you get more train options and can explore Mumbai for a day in between.

Search all these combinations on ConfirmYatra — enter Delhi as origin and Goa as destination, and the platform shows you every available train with real-time seat availability.

The Konkan Railway Experience

The stretch from Mumbai down to Goa is the highlight. The Konkan Railway passes through the Western Ghats, crossing over 2,000 bridges and through 91 tunnels. The section between Ratnagiri and Madgaon is the most scenic — the train runs along cliff edges with the sea far below, crosses deep river valleys on towering bridges, and weaves through tunnels carved into the mountains.

If you are taking this journey for the scenery, a few tips:

Sit on the right side (facing the direction of travel heading south) for the best sea views.

Avoid AC coaches for scenery. The tinted windows in AC coaches dull the colours. If you can manage it, Sleeper class gives you open windows and the wind on your face. The views are dramatically better.

Travel during or just after monsoon (July to October). The Konkan coast turns impossibly green during monsoon. Waterfalls appear on every hillside, the rivers are full, and mist clings to the mountains. The famous Dudhsagar Falls (one of India's tallest) is at its peak during this time.

Keep your camera charged. The train crosses the Panval Nadi Viaduct, one of the tallest rail bridges in India. The views appear suddenly as the train exits tunnels, so stay alert.

When to Book and How

For popular trains like the Rajdhani and Goa Express, book as early as possible — ideally on the first day the booking window opens (120 days before travel). Goa trains fill up fast, especially during:

  • November to February — Peak tourist season
  • Christmas and New Year week — The most competitive dates
  • Long weekends — Goa is a weekend getaway for many

Check seat availability on ConfirmYatra before booking. If your preferred train is already on a long waitlist, the platform's alternate route finder can suggest connecting options through Mumbai, Pune, or other junctions.

For Tatkal, the Goa Express Sleeper class Tatkal sells out in under 90 seconds during peak season. AC Tatkal is slightly less competitive. Refer to our Tatkal booking tips article for strategies.

Budget Breakdown

A rough budget for Delhi to Goa by train (per person, one way):

  • Train ticket (Sleeper): Rs 650 to Rs 800
  • Train ticket (3AC): Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,800
  • Food during journey (2 meals + snacks): Rs 300 to Rs 500 (if ordering via E-Catering)
  • Total budget option: Rs 950 to Rs 1,300
  • Total comfort option (3AC + good food): Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,300

Compare this to flight tickets (Rs 4,000 to Rs 12,000) and you can see why the train remains the favourite for budget travellers and backpackers.

Arriving in Goa

Most trains terminate at Madgaon (Margao) station or Vasco Da Gama station. Madgaon is the main junction and better connected to both North and South Goa. From Madgaon, you can take a local bus, pre-booked taxi, or auto-rickshaw to your hotel.

If you are heading to North Goa beaches (Calangute, Baga, Anjuna), Madgaon is about 40 km away — roughly an hour by taxi. For South Goa (Palolem, Agonda), it is closer, about 30 to 40 minutes.

Track your train's live running status on ConfirmYatra so you know exactly when you will arrive, and share the live status link with your hotel or taxi driver so they can time the pickup. No more waiting at empty stations wondering where your ride is.
