How to Read Your Train Ticket and PNR Number
New to train tickets? Here's how to read your Indian Railways ticket and PNR number — every field explained, from the 10-digit PNR to coach, berth, quota and status.

An Indian Railways ticket packs a lot into a small space. Once you know each field, it's easy to read. Here is your simple guide.
The PNR Number
At the top is your PNR — a unique 10-digit number for the booking. It links all passengers on that ticket and is what you use to check status. Enter it on our PNR status tool anytime to see your latest status and a prediction.
Train and Journey Details
- Train number & name — the 5-digit train number and its name.
- From / To stations with station codes (e.g. NDLS for New Delhi).
- Date of journey and departure/arrival times.
- Boarding point — where you actually board (can differ from the "from" station).
Class and Quota
- Class — SL, 3A (3AC), 2A (2AC), 1A (1AC), CC, 2S. See train classes explained.
- Quota — GN (General), TQ (Tatkal), PT (Premium Tatkal), LD (Ladies), etc.
Coach, Berth and Status
- Coach & berth — like "B2, 41, UB" (3AC coach 2, berth 41, Upper). Decode these in coach and berth codes explained.
- Status — CNF (Confirmed), RAC, or WL/GNWL with a number. Decode all codes in PNR status codes explained.
Passenger and Fare
- Passenger names, age, gender as booked.
- Fare and any Tatkal/convenience charges.
- ID note — carry an original photo ID; see valid ID proofs for train travel.
Quick Read Example
"PNR 2345678901 · 12951 · NDLS→BCT · 3A · GN · B2 41 UB · CNF" = a confirmed 3AC berth (coach B2, berth 41, Upper) on train 12951 from New Delhi to Mumbai under the general quota.
Bottom line: your ticket's key fields are the 10-digit PNR, train number, stations, class, quota, coach/berth, and status — once you can read those, you know exactly where and how you're travelling.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the PNR number on a train ticket?
The PNR is a unique 10-digit number for your booking, shown at the top of the ticket. It links all passengers on that ticket and is used to check status.
How do I read the coach and berth on my ticket?
The coach code (like B2 or S3) gives the class and coach number, and the berth code (LB, UB, SL, SU) gives the berth type. So "B2 41 UB" is 3AC coach 2, berth 41, Upper.
What does the quota on my ticket mean?
The quota shows how the ticket was booked — GN (General), TQ (Tatkal), PT (Premium Tatkal), LD (Ladies), and others. It affects fare and confirmation.
Where do I see my ticket status?
The status field shows CNF (confirmed), RAC, or WL/GNWL with a number. Check the latest status anytime with your PNR on our PNR status tool.
What's the difference between "from station" and "boarding point"?
The "from" station is the ticket's origin, while the boarding point is where you actually get on — it can be a later station on the route if you set it that way.
