Train Coach and Berth Codes Explained (SL, B1, S3, LB, SU)
Confused by codes like B1, S3, SL, LB or SU on your ticket? Here's what train coach and berth codes mean, so you can find your coach and berth quickly.

Your ticket shows codes like "B1, 34, LB" — and knowing what they mean helps you find your coach and berth fast. Here is the decoder.
Coach Codes — Which Coach You're In
The letter (with a number) tells you the class and coach:
- SL — Sleeper class (e.g. S1, S2, S3...). "S3" means Sleeper coach 3.
- B — 3AC (Three-tier AC): B1, B2, B3...
- A — 2AC (Two-tier AC): A1, A2...
- H / HA — 1AC (First AC) or First+2AC composite.
- C / CC — AC Chair Car: C1, C2...
- D / E — Second Seating (2S) / Executive Chair Car.
- M / G — Pantry / General (unreserved) coaches.
So S3 = Sleeper coach 3, B2 = 3AC coach 2, A1 = 2AC coach 1.
Berth Codes — Which Berth You Get
The berth type tells you where you sleep/sit:
- LB — Lower Berth
- MB — Middle Berth
- UB — Upper Berth
- SL — Side Lower (also used for RAC)
- SU — Side Upper
- WS / WL — Window Side (in chair cars)
For example, "B1, 34, LB" = 3AC coach 1, berth 34, a Lower Berth.
Finding Your Coach at the Station
Coaches are arranged in a set order along the platform. To find where your coach stops, check the coach position display or read how to find your coach at the station. Reach the right spot before the train arrives, as stops are brief.
Where to See These Codes
Your coach and berth appear on your ticket and PNR after booking (and after RAC/WL confirms). Check them on our PNR status tool, and learn to read the whole ticket in how to read your train ticket.
Bottom line: the coach code (SL/B/A/H/C) tells you the class and coach number, and the berth code (LB/MB/UB/SL/SU) tells you your berth type — together they pinpoint exactly where to sit or sleep.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does B1, S3, or A1 mean on a train ticket?
The letter is the class and the number is the coach. S3 is Sleeper coach 3, B1 is 3AC coach 1, and A1 is 2AC coach 1.
