IRCTC payment successful but ticket not booked — what happens to your money and refund

Your money left your account, the payment page said success — but there is no confirmed ticket. It is one of the most stressful IRCTC moments. The good news: your money is safe and comes back automatically. Here is what happened and what to do.

Why This Happens

The payment and the booking are two separate steps. Sometimes the payment succeeds at your bank, but the booking fails to complete on IRCTC — because of a session timeout, a server load spike during Tatkal, the last berth being taken a split second earlier, or a network drop between the bank and IRCTC. When booking fails after payment, IRCTC does not keep the money.

What Happens to Your Money

IRCTC auto-initiates a refund for the failed booking. You do not need to file anything. The amount is reversed to your original payment method — bank account, card, or UPI/wallet — usually within 3 to 5 working days. This is the same flow as any failed payment with money deducted.

How to Confirm You Weren't Charged for a Ticket

  • Log in to IRCTC and open My Transactions / Booked Ticket History — if no ticket (PNR) was generated, no ticket was booked.
  • Check Refund History to see the auto-reversal being processed.
  • Do not rebook in a panic before checking, or you may end up with two tickets.

When to Take Action

If the refund has not arrived after about 5 to 7 working days:

  • Verify the status in your IRCTC account and with your bank.
  • Raise a grievance through IRCTC support with your transaction reference.
  • See our step-by-step guide on refund not received and typical IRCTC refund times.

Bottom line: payment succeeded but no ticket means an automatic refund is on its way — check My Transactions and wait for the reversal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does IRCTC show payment successful but no ticket booked?

The payment and booking are separate. The payment can succeed at your bank while the booking fails on IRCTC — due to a timeout, server load during Tatkal, or the last berth being taken. IRCTC then refunds the amount.

Will I get my money back if the ticket wasn't booked?

Yes. IRCTC automatically initiates a refund to your original payment method, usually within 3 to 5 working days. You do not need to file anything for this auto-reversal.

How do I check if a ticket was actually booked?

Log in to IRCTC and open Booked Ticket History. If no PNR was generated, no ticket exists. Check Refund History to see the reversal in progress.

Should I rebook immediately if my ticket failed?

Check Booked Ticket History first. If no ticket was created, you can rebook — but confirm the first one truly failed, or you risk paying for two tickets.

What if the refund doesn't come after a week?

Verify the status in IRCTC and with your bank, then raise a grievance with your transaction reference. See our guide on getting a stuck refund back.
