A platform ticket is the most basic ticket in Indian Railways — and also the most misunderstood. It does not let you board a train. It does not reserve a seat. All it does is give you legal permission to enter the railway station platform. That is it.
But who actually needs one? Where do you buy it? And what happens if you get caught without one? Let me clear it all up.
What Is a Platform Ticket?
A platform ticket is a non-travel ticket that allows a person to enter the railway station platform area. It is meant for people who are:
- Dropping off or receiving someone at the station
- Helping elderly or disabled passengers board the train
- Meeting someone arriving on a train
- Simply visiting the station (some major stations are tourist attractions)
If you have a valid travel ticket (reserved or unreserved), you do not need a platform ticket. Your travel ticket automatically grants you platform access.
Platform Ticket Price in 2026
The standard platform ticket price at most Indian railway stations is Rs 10. However, some stations charge more:
- Major metro stations (New Delhi, Mumbai CSMT, Howrah, Chennai Central) — Rs 10 to Rs 50 depending on the station
- During peak season (festivals, holidays) — Some stations temporarily increase the price to Rs 20 to Rs 50 to control overcrowding
- Rajdhani and Shatabdi platforms — Some stations charge a premium for accessing premium train platforms
The price is printed on the ticket and varies by zone and station. It is always nominal and affordable.

Where to Buy a Platform Ticket
At the Station Counter
The simplest way. Walk to the ticket counter (usually a separate window from the reservation counter) and ask for a platform ticket. Pay the fee, get the ticket. No ID required. No advance booking. Just show up and buy.
Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs)
Most major stations now have ATVMs — machines similar to metro ticket machines. Select "Platform Ticket," insert the money (coins or small notes), and the machine prints your ticket. These are faster than the counter during rush hours.
UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) App
Indian Railways' UTS app lets you buy platform tickets digitally on your phone. Download the app, register with your phone number, select your station, and buy a platform ticket through UPI or net banking. The digital ticket on your phone is valid for entry.
This is the most convenient option — no queue, no waiting, no paper ticket to keep track of.
Platform Ticket Rules
Valid for 2 hours. Your platform ticket is valid for 2 hours from the time of purchase. After that, it expires, and you need a new one if you want to stay on the platform.
Valid only at the issuing station. A platform ticket bought at New Delhi is not valid at Old Delhi station or Nizamuddin. Each station requires its own ticket.
One person per ticket. Each person entering the platform needs their own ticket. You cannot use one platform ticket for a group.
No luggage carrying without proper ticket. If you are helping someone carry heavy luggage onto the platform, the platform ticket covers you. But if you are carrying commercial goods, that requires separate permission.
Children under 5 are exempt. Children below 5 years do not need a platform ticket when accompanied by an adult who has one.
What Happens if You Enter Without a Platform Ticket?
Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff and ticket checkers occasionally check platform tickets at station entrances and on platforms. If you are caught without one:
- Fine of Rs 250 to Rs 350 (varies by zone and station)
- Possible ejection from the platform area
- Repeat offenders may face higher penalties
The fine is significantly more than the ticket price, so buying one is always the sensible choice.
Platform Ticket During Festivals and Special Occasions
During major festivals (Diwali, Chhath Puja, Eid, Christmas), some stations temporarily increase platform ticket prices or restrict platform ticket sales entirely. This is a crowd management measure — when stations are already overflowing with passengers, additional non-travellers on the platform create safety hazards.
If you are planning to receive or drop someone during a major festival, check with the station in advance whether platform tickets are being issued.
Can You Board a Train with a Platform Ticket?
Technically, no. A platform ticket does not grant you permission to board any train. If you board a train with only a platform ticket, you are travelling without a valid ticket and will be penalized by the TTE — you will need to pay the full fare from the train's origin to its destination plus a penalty.
The only exception is in genuine emergencies, and even then, you must approach the TTE immediately and pay for a proper ticket.
Smart Usage Tips
Buy the platform ticket on UTS app while travelling to the station. By the time you arrive, your ticket is ready on your phone. Walk straight to the platform without stopping at any counter.
If you are dropping someone regularly (weekly commuter drop-offs, for instance), the UTS app saves time every single week.
For elderly helpers — if you are helping an elderly or disabled passenger board the train, inform the station staff. They are generally accommodating and may allow you extra time on the platform beyond the 2-hour window.
Checking your loved one's train status on ConfirmYatra helps too. If the train is running 3 hours late, you do not need to buy a platform ticket and wait on the platform. Track the live status from home, time your arrival at the station, and buy the ticket only when the train is actually close.
