Planning a trip with your furry companion? Indian Railways does allow pets on trains, but the rules are specific and you cannot just walk onto a train with your dog. There is a proper booking process, designated spaces, and fees involved.
This guide covers everything you need to know about travelling with pets on Indian trains in 2026.
Can You Take Pets on Indian Railways?
Yes, but with conditions. Indian Railways permits dogs and other small pets on trains. However, pets are not allowed in regular passenger compartments. Your pet must travel either in:
1. The luggage van (brake van) — Most common for large dogs
2. A First AC coupe — If you book the entire coupe for your exclusive use
3. AC First Class (1A) — Only if other passengers in the coupe do not object
The most practical option for most travellers is the luggage van. Your pet travels in a cage or carrier in the brake van, which is at the front or rear of the train. For First AC, you need to book all berths in the coupe so that no other passenger is affected.
How to Book for Your Pet
Pet travel on Indian Railways requires advance booking at the railway station parcel office. You cannot book pet travel online through IRCTC — this must be done in person.
Luggage Van Booking Process
Step 1 — Book your own train ticket first (through IRCTC or the counter).
Step 2 — Visit the parcel office at your departing station at least 24 hours before travel.
Step 3 — Fill out the pet booking form. You will need to provide your ticket details (PNR), pet description (breed, weight), and your contact information.
Step 4 — Pay the pet transportation fee. This varies based on distance and weight but is generally quite affordable — usually between Rs 50 and Rs 300 for dogs.
Step 5 — Get a receipt. This is your pet's "ticket" and you will need it when collecting your pet at the destination.
First AC Coupe Booking
If you want your pet with you in the cabin:
Step 1 — Book all berths in a 1AC coupe (usually 2 or 4 berths depending on the train).
Step 2 — At the time of booking or at the station, inform the station master that you will be travelling with a pet.
Step 3 — Pay any additional charges. You may need to pay a cleaning surcharge.
Step 4 — Keep the pet in a carrier or on a leash at all times inside the coupe.
This option is more expensive since you are booking the entire coupe, but your pet stays with you throughout the journey.

Pet Travel Rules and Requirements
Health Certificate
You need a health certificate from a registered veterinarian issued within a few days of travel. This confirms your pet is vaccinated (rabies vaccination is mandatory for dogs) and fit to travel.
Carrier or Cage
For luggage van travel, your pet must be in a proper cage or carrier. The container should be large enough for the animal to stand, turn around, and lie down. It should be well-ventilated, waterproof at the base, and securely fastened.
Water and Food
You are responsible for your pet's food and water during the journey. The railway staff does not feed or water animals in the luggage van. For short journeys (under 8 hours), a water bowl and some food should suffice. For longer journeys, arrange for someone to check on the pet at major station stops if possible.
Breed and Animal Restrictions
Indian Railways has certain restrictions:
- Aggressive dog breeds may face additional scrutiny or restrictions depending on the zone
- Wild animals and endangered species are not permitted
- Fish and birds in proper containers are generally allowed in the luggage van
- Livestock (goats, cattle, etc.) have separate rules and travel in goods trains
Small dogs, cats, and most domestic pets are accepted without issues. If you have an unusual pet, call the station parcel office in advance to confirm.
Tips for a Smooth Journey with Your Pet
Exercise your pet before the journey. A well-exercised dog is calmer during travel. Take them for a long walk or play session before heading to the station.
Carry familiar items. A favourite blanket or toy in the carrier helps reduce anxiety. The carrier should smell like home, not be freshly washed.
Do not sedate your pet without veterinary advice. Some owners give sedatives for long journeys, but this can be dangerous, especially at high altitudes or in extreme temperatures. Consult your vet.
Arrive early. Give yourself at least 1 hour before departure to complete the parcel office formalities and get your pet settled in the luggage van.
Check on your pet at major stops. During long halts (15 to 20 minutes), walk to the luggage van to check on your pet, offer water, and reassure them. Ask the luggage van staff for access.
Carry clean-up supplies. Paper towels, poop bags, and a small bottle of cleaning solution. Accidents happen, especially with nervous animals.
Collecting Your Pet at the Destination
At the arrival station, go to the luggage van immediately after the train stops. Show your pet booking receipt to the staff, and they will hand over your pet. Inspect the carrier and your pet for any issues.
If you are getting off at an intermediate station (not the train's final destination), inform the luggage van staff well in advance so they are ready to hand over the pet quickly during the halt.
Service Animals and Emotional Support Animals
Indian Railways allows guide dogs for visually impaired passengers to travel in the passenger compartment free of charge. The dog should be properly trained and on a leash. Inform the station master at the time of boarding.
There is currently no formal policy for emotional support animals, and these would follow the standard pet travel rules.
Planning Your Pet-Friendly Trip
Before booking, search your route on ConfirmYatra to find trains with luggage vans. Not all trains have a brake van — check the train's coach composition. Long-distance trains almost always have one, but some shorter-route trains may not.
Also check the live running status on your travel day. If the train is severely delayed in extreme heat or cold, consider the comfort and safety of your pet in the luggage van. In extreme weather, the 1AC coupe option is safer for your animal.
