IRCTC transaction status meanings — booked, failed, payment initiated, pending

IRCTC shows a transaction status after every booking attempt — and the wording can be confusing. Here is what each status means and exactly what to do.

Booked

Your payment succeeded and the ticket is confirmed/created. You'll get a PNR by SMS and an e-ticket by email. Verify it on our PNR status tool. If it's Booked but not visible in your history, it's usually a filter or sync issue, not a failure.

Payment Initiated

Your payment started but IRCTC hasn't yet received a final success/failure from the bank. The money may be debited, but the ticket isn't created yet. Don't pay again immediately — wait for it to settle. Full guide: payment initiated but ticket not booked.

Under Process / Payment Pending

An in-between state waiting on your bank's final signal. It resolves to Booked or Failed, usually within minutes to a few hours. See IRCTC payment pending / under process.

Payment Successful but Not Booked

The money went through but the ticket wasn't created (a timeout or seat lost at the last step). The amount is auto-refunded. See payment successful but ticket not booked.

Failed

The transaction did not complete. If money was debited, IRCTC auto-refunds it, usually within 3–7 working days — no form needed. Track it via how to check IRCTC failed transaction refund status or IRCTC payment failed but money deducted.

Refunded / Under Process (Refund)

The refund has been issued to your original payment method. If IRCTC says refunded but your bank hasn't credited it, see IRCTC amount not received from the bank.

Bottom line: "Booked" means you're confirmed; "Payment Initiated" and "Under Process" are temporary and will resolve; "Failed" and "Payment Successful but Not Booked" trigger an automatic refund — so check your Transaction History and don't repay until a pending one settles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Payment Initiated" mean in IRCTC?

It means your payment started but IRCTC hasn't received a final success or failure from your bank yet, so the ticket isn't created. It will resolve to Booked or Failed — don't pay again immediately.

What is the difference between "Failed" and "Payment Successful but Not Booked"?

Failed means the transaction didn't complete; Payment Successful but Not Booked means the money went through but the ticket wasn't created. Both trigger an automatic refund to your source account.

Does a "Failed" IRCTC transaction get refunded automatically?

Yes. If money was debited on a failed transaction, IRCTC auto-refunds it to your original payment method, usually within 3–7 working days, with no form required.

What should I do if the status is "Under Process"?

Wait — it's a temporary state awaiting your bank's final signal and usually settles within minutes to a few hours. Don't repay immediately; check your Booked and Failed transaction history after a short while.
